Who's taken up the challenge of repairing the road and will SH1 be open by Christmas?

It’s the “biggest job in New Zealand” according to Peter ‘Thommo’ Thompson, Site Supervisor, and one of the more than 1000 men and women working to repair the quake-damaged highway and rail route along the Kaikoura coast.

Whole mountains moved in the 7.8 shake - sections of SH1 were wiped out or completely buried. The scale of damage was unprecedented and the work required to fix it, colossal.
Thommo told his workers upfront “it’ll be the hardest job of your life.” So who’s taken up the challenge? And will SH1 be open by Christmas?
